Fall and Rise - Part II

Thank you.

For those who liked and were affected by my blog. Some reacted adversely, Some emotionally, and a few, traumatically. Some were concerned about spelling. I think, the hand phone texting, has rendering them redundant. Spellings I meant. Spellings are flying out of the Windows. Oops! Sorry, folks out of Macs and Linux'. I am not brand affiliated.

As I indicated, this wont be a dialogue. I am not going to arm wrestle those educated geeks and be caught in their web all the time. There were some accusals of me being a perfectionist. I will tell you what all I am not. Jut this , Err! One more time. I am not a perfectionist.

I seek excellence. I try. Only try and am no where close to it. I am not a believer of any religion and don’t intend to be. I do not hate those who are committed to their cause of defending religion . I only pity them and sometimes fear them . I don’t believe in any of the traps or webs spun by various religions. Marriage is only one of them. Have been caught in it multiple times . Damn! I am having a dialogue. Which I didn't want in the first place. What do you expect ? I am an actor and a sucker for dialogues. Any way this is what happens when people try to strike up a conversation while I am telling a story. I digress. I guess actors and directors are prone to that ailment.

Cut to the chase

Rewinding a bit here for left over details .( No blood and gore though. Certified UA)

<<<<<<<<<<<< II > I was chasing life in an ambulance not the speediest of vehicles, but should do for now. When the ambulance arrived at my office With my pain, it felt like they took an hour I was about to suggest, may be a tourniquet might help, {But G knows all that} . It seems Apollo ambulance arrived in 15 minutes and took 20 more minutes to maneuver to where I was. Nearly 100 feet.

Seems I was awake and giving instructions to the ambulance attendants instead of saying "Thank goodness and you sirs" I said   “Careful I might have a spinal fracture too. Please put my leg back on the stretcher in the approximate shape a leg should be and don’t drop any pieces of my bone. “

“Damn know all.  He is such an intolerable pain in the ass” The ambulance attendants must have thought.

I had exactly the same thoughts! “Intolerable pain in the ass” My back was hurting.  I do not remember the above conversation. My production manager Mr.Moorthy, driver Mr.Bharathidasan and office boy Mr.Shanmugam filled in the blanks sporadically, They later told me that I  was conscious and giving instructions.

>>>>>>>>>>>>> II >Fast forward

To the operation theatre, through the E.R.

The relief that I had reached the hospital increased the pain. I did not even see the doctor. They put me out like a light. I sank peacefully into unconsciousness.

When I woke up I heard a moan. Not  I,  someone else was coming to or going. Hopefully back to the ward.

Someone wished me, a good morning. So, the night was behind me.

On the way out I saw my brother Mr.Chandrahasan first. He was the guy who came to the hospital When I was born. He came with his elder brother who was 24.  Mr.Chandrahasan was 18. He was eager to see his new born baby brother. On the way to their mother’s bed, they saw many  newborns in a room full of wailing little bundles with faces, in cribs.

ChandraH, later told me ,that child when he could have conversations with it. He told me that he chose a baby of his liking in his mind, and wished aloud “I wish that one is our kid brother”.
Later he was informed his wish had come true. He must have smiled then I missed that one. That’s the kind of smile he had as I rolled out of the O.T.

“We are taking you to the C.C.U Sir” said a voice rolling, my gurney.

“Critical care unit? “ Boy! I must be in a really bad shape"

I showed a “Thumbs up” to my brother and he shook my hand very gently.  I have seen him smile at me a thousand times before. When he came to see new born Shruti, When I told him a new story idea, when the Queen of England agreed to come to the inaugural of Marudanaayagam. This one was different. I saw a lot of painful emotions surging behind. We, as a family, are not prone to showing affection in public. Even in private not too overtly.

Back in the CCU. G Settled me in and had to leave. CCU does not allow a family congregation. I was alone but the pain had reduced. The doctors told me that I have enough painkillers and sedatives to last the day. They explained that I had a nerve block to block away pain in my Operated leg

Operated leg? I did not feel my leg at all. That was when with great difficulty I looked down at my leg. I did not show how taken aback I was.

My leg had metal struts and bolts attached to it. Six rods were impaled into my shin and pain. With the stainless steel impalements my bandaged leg resembled, what shall I say, A cross between a bandaged trumpet and a clarinet.

“This is Dr.Balaji Srinivasan This is your plastic surgeon Dr. Ganpathy Krishnan and that is your anesthetician Dr.Ravi Krishna. He is the one not making you feel the pain of those rods impaled and holding your bones together” DR.J.R.S my G.P., introduced the other doctors and explained the rods introduced into me.

Those impalements would have made Vlad the Impaler proud. Also,  Innocent III  (Of the notorious Spanish inquisition.) For all that, the pain was amazingly and gratefully less. Doctors explained that I had a Femoral nerve block and a Epidural injecting pain meds into my lower body.

“Like what they give ladies not too keen on labour pain? I asked without much of a slur in my speech.

“Exactly. Now rest" Insisted the doctors, with a smile.

Wow! Science is amazing. It has extended the facility of painless labour to men. We men must rise to the occasion and also take the labour away from ladies and deliver babies. Actually I personally know many men who have  done that. They were all Gynecologists though.

My mind wandered. Nothing new, but this was heavy wandering like the sages of yore seeking wisdom. Must be the Morphine. I faded out the smiling doctors who nodded among themselves and were leaving the room anyway. I was left alone with smiling Telugu nurse. How did I know she was Telugu ? I was surprised.

The morphine was kicking in.

Thanks to all these fine opioids and painkillers, My pain was just a faint echo but with sincere promises of return.

To be continued….

    1. @Karthik, your straight to point is very much appreciated. The best quality of any legend is they know what they are doing even if they know it would fail.

For example, Brad Hogg took Sachin wicket and he gave the same ball after match to get the former's autograph and Sachin wrote, this won't happen again!!! It's not Kamal Hassan it's
      Kamal Experimental...

    2. Rightly said Karthik!

As Kamal fans we need him to make either big movies (Vishwaroopam) or artistic ones (Guna, Mahanadhi). He is doing neither of it now.

Sir, please start Indian 2, which would require lesser physical strain and also would have immense appeal among audience

    3. @Kamal sir: I am a die hard fan of you. Having said that, I cannot bear the pain when your movies don't fare well in box office. My suggestion is to why not make an effort in collecting all the movies of yours and start statistically analyzing what went right and wrong about your movies. Will that not give you a concrete evidence of why many of your efforts go futile? As said by many, Sabaash Naidu/Kundu doesn't interest any kamal fan. So you can imagine the outcome! Why not you stop experimenting and get back into what suits you best like nayagan, mahaanadhi, guna, kurthipunal etc., Why to burn your fingers on movies like manmadhan ambu, mumbai express, thoongavanam and sabaash Naidu?

    4. Karthikeyan KR, Speak for yourself. I am eagerly awaiting Sabaash Naidu as well.

    5. Guys that legend is undergoing treatment. Wait for him to recover. You just cant throw shit at people during their hard times. World cinema has not seen an actor like Mr.kamal haasan. If u are a true fan you should respect him on what he does. Appreciate his efforts. Doesn't he know what he is doing ?
He knows what's good for him . @karthick if u feel sabash naidu is unambitious keep it for yourself. He is intellectual superior to us and knows what is right for him.
All that he needs now is peaceful mind. If u cant provide that , don't interfere. ( udhavi panatiyum ubathrogam pannadheenga ) . Hope you get well soon sir. And be back to your utmost BEST.

  2. Most of your recent movies are portraying too much of western sensibilities, commonly seen among English speaking rich people of this country.. 99% of the audience cant emphathize with such characters.. Comedy of the "peters" wont appeal to the common man.. We dont want masala movies, but we want movies with characters we can relate to ..

I want movies like Aalavandan where you excelled as both hero and villain.. in fact to be honest you excelled more as a villain. I had never seen a better villain before that. an invincible villain who can be killed only by himself.. i never get bored with that movie.. to be precise Nandu.. unforgettable character.. Please do movies like Aalavandan. want to see you in action movies. hope you get better soon and give us movies like Aalavandan.

  25. Hi KH, hope you are recovering well and in good spirits! I am not ardent fan material for anyone but was inspired by you in a big way. Now I hardly watch movies, for they are rarely genuinely good ones. Mostly commercial movies with no intellectual stimulation, only sensual, or may be I am the freaky one sitting far from the madding crowd, feeling indifferent to all this. Sometimes life puts us in such situations where we can reflect on the life already spent and gives a clearer picture of what needs to be done. For me you have given the courage of thinking differently and despise hero worship(ironically :-) ) and I am only a speck among those influenced by you. Thank you for that.Curious as I was to know about you, I accidentally came up on the elusive Advaitha philosophy which I am still struggling to get a grasp of(but this idea wouldn't leave my head and hence the indifference to everything probably :-)) As you begin your next episode with greater vigor and sound health, we want to see more of your movies like anbe sivam, Indian etc, something spiritual or historical would be great too(dont want you to get in any trouble though!)
ok enough of me taking advantage of this opportunity :-) Wishing you a speedy recovery!
ps - awaiting Sabash Naidu, cant beat the witty humor sense in you!

  31. Hi Kamalji! picture of the fractured leg conveys the pain and the rate of the damage happened even though you cover that with wit.
And it is sheer happiness to know that the comments we made noticed by you.
And no wonder you - not end up but started with your regular "dialogue" on god and marriage. It seems you strongly hooked up with this and it is almost not possible for you to end any interview, write up, or film without these.
And in a way that it seems you are the most spiritual person who always seeking god and his existence forever!
god is there in all your thinking it seems!
Your writing reminds Late Sujatha sir!
we read ever bits and pieces of your information and watch all your films multiple times and remember almost all the dialogues of your films...
my all time favourite is "venuma vendamannu sollu.. mudiyuma mudiyadannu naan pathukkaran" from raja parvai!
next one is "manushanukku santhosham adu anubhavikkumbodu therivathillai" even Anandbabu referred once this in his interview and I got goosebumps!
kamalji! Get well soon.. It seems your team mates afraid to criticise your works or you don't invite their views may be the reason your theams are revolving around few things constantly which we want you to break up. Please don't consider this as "kaiya murukkum" category!
we want raghavan effect once again.. with multiple folds!

  50. To the so called advisors (including me that requested him to try out young talents):
the man knows his career better than any of us. He is the one that gave us Mahanadhi after Maharasan, Guna after Singaravelan, Kuruthipunal after Kalaignan. He is the one who gave us Satyadaa light years ahead of Kabalidaa!
Let's give the man some space, it's great that he is even writing this blog. If I would have had metal plates in leg, I probably will still be in the bed after 4-5 weeks let alone work on the next schedule of a trilingual with prosthetic make up. I am pretty confident same goes for all of us here.

    Nayakare,
I still wonder why/what prompted you to jump over to that sunshade (or should I say "attempt" to jump over to that sunshade). Never mind our overly friendly free advice. We all love you here. Please keep writing, with or without typos, in English, Tamil or even Latin - doesn't matter to us.

    Firstly , wishing u a speedy recovery..
Apart from this, ive always wondered... Whenever i watch Al Pachino on screen , im reminded of watching ur movies... If u have some time at ur disposal , u should catch a movie named " Carlito's way" ..may be u've seen it already, may be not... Kinda odd seeing similar mannerisms and dialogue delivery.. But being an artist , u are bound to absorb things here and there and present them in ur next performance.. But y humble opinion is that there is a lot of reproduction as against processed / signature style of delivery... Food for thought ?... Congrats on the Chevalier though... ######

  69. Glad that you are recovering well. Sad that even at thid time you speak abt atheism. Not necessary at all. Having fallen from 20 ft high and today you are well means its your katma and Gods grace. If it's not wat else is it? As a diehard fan of you i am taking the liberty to tell you this. Looking forward to your new movie.

Kamalji says "As I indicated, this wont be a dialogue"

Too bad, I thought I can give some pointers to the agnostic Kamalji to ponder on the God claims he claims to deny. Recuperation gives you an opportunity for contemplation. Funny isn't it, you deny God.
You embrace the concept of God the world presents to you, believe it only to deny it later, the same Kamalji who reads deep into the things that other people look at superficially, but not God. He accepts a generic notion doing the rounds ! hail Richard Dawkins!

That's what ego does to you. You ponder over things only to the extent your personality allows, that personality which you project outside to the world for everyone to see.

    "...iruntha nalla irukkumnu thaan solren".

Keep pondering Kamalji ;) and that mangled trumpet x clarinet of yours looks horrible. Take care...

  84. Thalaivaa, great read although we reckon the content should be more than a month old and you're much better off now. Its also nice of you to share your family expereince with us, and how much they back you to the core.

Also like many had suggested here, Sabash Naidu is not the kind script we're expecting, we demand movies like Aboorva Sahodarargal, Mahanadhi, Guna, Anbe Sivam, Heyram, Pancha Thanthiram, Vettaiyaadu Vilaidyadu or Dasvatharam. In your old Telugu movie oka radha iddaru krishnulu, you'd have donned the role of a gypsy and spoken in the coastal Andra slang, the comedy that shouldn't have got noticed much those days. In Dasavatharam, you've promoted the same stuff to the next level of visibility with Balram Naidu comedy. The role has already been already done and dusted twice.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish now with this movie called Sabash Naidu? Just because you want to share some verbal and situational irony (comedy) with Brahmanandam. May be it might have some social message, but really doubt
it can prompt me to watch it twice regardless of the content (may be Ilayaraja would've done wonders).

It may (possibly not) click but certainly cannot keep cash registers ringing for the Lyca producers nor add another feather to your cap, even if it becomes a BB by luck.

Also these days you do not need to be an educated geek to write blogs on the internet. Knowledge comes for two per pence, only wisdom needs experience and application. The first few lines of the blog simply suggest the bigger psychosomatic problem that was looming for more than a decade; talking out of the hat on areas a celebrity of your stature should not skate around;you were often harping before the mic releasing political statements on areas you're not qualified enough completely off the tangent that has certainly not gone down well.

Linux and Mac are not Brands on a purist sense to start with but certainly another bizzare statement that left my head spinning followed by your weird view points about femoral nerve, labour pain, women and babies..not again, Jesus wept ! you're not Robin Cook. Content and contradictions aside, if a person cannot string together a proper sentence in English with a Windows or an Android device with all autospell and grammer checks, in no way they can do it on a Mac.

You're an artist, over the years with dedication and hard work you've perfected (still perfecting) the skill of entertaining audience with your acting capability, dance, fights, singing and other fine other fine arts. Its better to stick your strengths than rambling about literature and science. Your money and fame is because of these of these traits and hard work not because of your scientific understanding, political viewpoints or literary capability.

Hope you stick your strengths, your wisdom resides in fine arts.

(Keeping the mouth shut can make extremely thick people look more clever, may be you can learn it from your rival. Attempting a Baron Munchausen (or Don Quixote) on areas other than some ones core strengths, can make even intelligent persons look dumb, you can learn from yourself).

How on earth you could speak about what movies he need to do? Let him recover well and he will entertain us as always. As a Kamal fan I go to the movie with blank mind and experience what's coming on screen.

  100. Firstly hoping for a speedy recovery sir, I wonder if you would even read any of this but just looking at a few comments I wonder how much it takes to be a celebrity! The perks aside, I saw a lot of people telling you what YOU SHOULD BE DOING! (mind you, not even a suggestion or a request but more like a command). If I were in your place I would definitely have told them not to poke their unusually long noses into what I am doing, with MY JOB! and that's probably why I can never be you! I'm sure you must have seen a lot of "@karthikeyas" your way, and still powered through to come up with cult classics or epic comedies! Whatever it is that comes out of your stable is going to be great! Again wish you recuperate soon and mesmerize us with your work! :)

  105. Spelling?! Well Mr. Kamal Haasan, that the words in your blog come directly from you was just unthinkable even a few weeks, if not days before you started it! Don't think you have to explain yourself about the 'perfection' part. You really don't have to. And by the way, you don't have a clue how much I laughed when I read, the first time; about the way you described what your operated leg looked like. "A cross between a bandaged trumpet and a clarinet" is just perfect and hilarious!:D
